The request for a marriage certificate/divorce decree is based on comparing the marital status on the FAFSA to the relationships of the persons included in the household on the web form.

If the student indicates that they are not married (single, divorced, widowed) on the ISIR but include a person with the relationship of spouse in the household on the web form it will request a marriage certificate due to the discrepancy between the ISIR and web form.

If the student indicates that they are married on the ISIR but do not include a person with the relationship of spouse in the household grid of the web form a divorce decree/proof of separation is required.

StudentVerification also performs the same checks for the parents on a dependent student's ISIR.

If the dependent student's parents are married on the ISIR but both parents are not included in the household grid of the household form, a divorce decree/proof of separation is required.

If the dependent student's parents choose one of the unmarried (never married, divorced, widowed), options besides unmarried and living together on the ISIR and both parents are included in the household grid of the household form, a marriage certificate is required.

If the student believes that they are getting one of these document upload requests in error, the student should to correct their household form by selecting the fill out button. The student and if required the parent must re-sign the household form to re-evaluate the upload steps in the task.
