Introduction

IP Reporting allows institutions to monitor the IP addresses that StudentForms users are logging in from. This can help detect fraud if a high number of students are logging in from the same IP address and it is not a known public IP address like a school computer lab.

Users with the Admin role can manage appeal transactions under Settings > IP Reporting.

IP Reporting

IP Reporting all attempted logins, whether successful or failed. This page allows you to view the data through to separate perspectives: by IP address and by User.

Viewing Activity By IP

View by IP allows an institution to review all Internet Protocol (IP) addresses of computers that have either attempted and failed to login or have logged in successfully. A high amount of logins and unique users may be normal from a school computer lab; high numbers from IP addresses outside of the institution warrant investigation.

Each IP address record includes data of how many unique students have successfully logged in (failed attempts are not counted), the number of failed attempts to log in from that address, the number of successful logins from that address, and an indicator if that address is currently marked as monitor.

Please note that Unique Users is a distinct count of students that have logged in from that IP address. Successful Logins will count multiple times the same students have successfully logged in.

There are several actions a user can take in this view:

  • update the Start Date and/or End Date to change the date range of the data in view
  • click the Exclude IP (remove person) icon to exclude the IP address from the view
    • Institutions may wish to exclude IP addresses they trust are safe, such as school IP addresses
    • An excluded IP can be returned to view using settings in the Manage Excluded tab (see more below)
  • click the Monitor IP (eyeball) icon to flag the IP address as a record to watch
    • A check mark indicator will appear under the Monitored column for quick display
    • A monitored IP can be unflagged by click the icon again, or using settings in the Manage Monitored tab (see more below)
  • click the View (binoculars) icon to view more details about the record

The "More Information About IP" modal lists all of the successful logins from the selected IP address. This includes the student name, student ID, and date and time of each login.

Viewing Activity By User

View by user allows an institution to review all students who have logged in. A few unique IP addresses is probably not a red flag (due to logging in through multiple devices such as a home pc, smart phone away from home, school computer lab, etc).

Each student record includes data of how many unique students have successfully logged in (failed attempts are not counted) and an indicator if that address is currently marked as monitor.

Please note that Unique IPs is a distinct count of IP addresses that a student has logged in from. Multiple logins will from the same IP address will not be counted again.

There are several actions a user can take in this view:

  • update the Start Date and/or End Date to change the date range of the data in view
  • click the Exclude User (remove person) icon to exclude a student from the view

The "More Information About User" modal lists all of the successful logins for the selected student. This includes the student name, student ID, and date and time of each login.

Managing Excluded Users/IP Addresses

The Managed Excluded tab contains all of the IP addresses and Users that have been excluded from the main Activity tab. From here an institution can review and manage exclusions.

Similar to the Activity tab, excluded records can be viewed by IP address or by users. If an institution wishes to remove an IP address or user from the exclusion list, that record will return to being visible within the Activity tab again and be removed from this tab.

When viewing By IP

  • click the Include IP (add person) icon to remove an IP address from the exclusion list. This IP address will appear under the Activity tab

When viewing By User

  • click the Include User (add person) icon to remove a user from the exclusion list. This user will appear under the Activity tab

Managing Monitored Users/IP Addresses

The Manage Monitored tab contains all of the IP addresses and Users that have been flagged for monitoring from the main Activity tab. From here an institution can review and manage monitored IP addresses and users.

Similar to the Activity tab, excluded records can be viewed by IP address or by users. If an institution wishes to remove an IP address or user from the monitored list, that record will be unflagged from the Monitored column within the Activity tab and be removed from this tab.

When viewing By IP

  • click the Un-Monitor IP (eyeball slash) icon to remove the monitor flag from an IP address
    • alternatively this can be done by clicking the same icon from the Activity tab, when viewing By IP

When viewing By User
